Igat Des, he's the husband to Dalat YB Hajjah Fatimah..I am not sure of her chinese name..the father to Kamarulzaman! A very ambitious individual since the first day I met him..took over Mohd. Sabil's responsibilities, and now he's somewhere with Malaysian Examination Syndicate..I know a little lah.

Podgee maam, we kiddos knew he was going to be the state education director in 1981!!! We have thought too that he was going to be a politician in Bintulu!!! Instead..you know lah. I don't think he cares too much about GT since we were always at odd!! Yes..the target was Mr. golden Teeth's car, but they said it was so dark..they also called it Batik Indonesia!!! You know, some of my classmates asked me who did it!! I turned away..shaking my head I didn't know? Deep down they must have thought I had everything to do with it!!Suspicion was always there because..ahhh hummm ehhh.....under attack and scrutiny 24 seven katakan. I was somewhere else also in the darkness!!! By the way, I got a shocker from Diana Rose yesterday!!!

GR, nyadi belama utai bakatu laban diperatika ari ulah serta pendiau ti nyelai.Nyamai endar urang nyimpulka penemu ngumbai tu nyangka nya..some of the kids ti dikelala aku kelia suah kena tajapan pan couldn't kill a fly but begulai enggau nembiak ti mayuh ulah..guilty by association kini..Some even got punished for nothing actually..kasih aku meda, but that's the way dunya ti enda alus baka serga although enda kala meda ehh hehehe. Amai ingat endar nuan ka pengawa ke udah nyadi maia nya suba...

Aku agi ga ingat ka kes kereta ti kena cat (albeit, not the intended target)nya suba. Tang aku sampai ka sehari tu lalu enda nemu the real identity of those who actually did it ! Sangka-sangka aja bisi aku nemu sekeda But as you said "Anang Salah Sangka, tajapan".

Gerubi D, kena implicated dalam kes tu laban, munyi ko cerita maia nya suba, nuan nemu the real identity of those who actually did it, but refuse to reveal them, even under interrogation at our 'Most Merciful, Most Compassionate' Adi's office.

Mr. Ong, for his part is a real gentleman during the whole ordeal and Chia Pin Pin is a real friend for trying his best to convince Mr Ong (his uncle) that Gerubi D is definitely not among the offenders.

Salute to Adi too for handling it, as usual "The most merciful, the most compassionate" way possible.
He may have his short-comings (but so are we, as human) but Adi was and is the most liberal minded thinker and tolerant Tuansipul I have ever had. Compared to MISS Khatijah and that Mr. "Ah,Ah,Ah" - I do not even recall his name), Adi do not have to make any effort to get ahead of either one or both combined, in term of everything, by universal miles ! I am not defending Adi but had it not been for him, the 'cat kereta episode' and a whole lot of other 'Sins' that we did so frequently committed would have prevented us from simply attending Kolej at all. I can recall many instances where many 'Publicly seen Sins' are being tolerated in those 'good ol kolej days'-

1. Smoking.

Aku semina di kangau ka 'Merciful Adi' ngagai Opis iya pasal pengawa tu Sekali aja, sepemanjai aku 4 taun (1980~1983)di Kolej. The outcome was a real surprise and a relief. Bakatu ka nya, nyadi sometimes in 1981. Masuk Opis berandau utai bukai dulu, small talk ko orang diatu.. Udah nya di kejut ka Adi, nanya "Do you smoke cigarette ? Regularly ?" Tekejut, saut spontan aku "Yes Sir".

Udah nya ko Adi ;

"I Know,". "In fact I know all of you that do smoke cigarette. I can call all of you up by simply implying that you did smoke, without having to catch you doing it red-handed and punish you all for that. But that would not be fair. I need to catch you doing it red-handed and have some evidence, eg the place, brand of cigarette or whom you are with to make the offence punishable in fairness.

However, to do that would require so much of an effort and we could not force you to stop even after repeated punishment.

Therefore what I am implying is smoke if you must but Do Not do it in public. Do it in your room or elsewhere & away from everyone else, especially teachers.

Nonetheless, if they (the teacher) and I catch you red-handed smoking anywhere within and outside Kolej, you all will still be punished"

Imagine my relief when I heard that !

2. Coupling .

Haha, this topic sure will bring lots of funny/happy memories....

I shall not mention 'whose's whose so & so' here, lest we cause an uproar. Pengawa tu suba pan endang so common among the Guys & Girls that do have the tendency to fall head over heel at each other. An open display of closeness among these 'tied-up' guys & girls were so obvious to everyone too, in those days that it was assumed as -being officially tolerated !

Widespread this practise may be, but to be fair to all those other 75% good Girls & Guys, they remain girlish/boyish but never got tied-up (even up to these days, for some). I wonder how many really did end up being as Husband & Wife ! From our batch, None that I heard of !

One thing for sure though, I was never called up to 'The Merciful Adi" office for this offence, though he knows about it. The only thing Adi did was to make my tied-up (that time) as day-scholar on the following year !

To cut the story short, udah The Merciful Adi pindah, middle of 83, datai Khatidjah or was it Mr Ah,Ah,Ah (remember we counted the time he blurted out that "Ah !" during the assembly when he first came ?) I was called up for that 2nd offence.... and had an earful !

That being one of the many reason I appreciate 'The Merciful Adi' tenure as Tuansipol at Kolej. Adi have a more lasting impact on my way of thinking & looking out at the world around us today......

Another is that Adi still remember me by name when we met recently (refer to my blog to look at Adi's photo with me in Feb 2005, during Hishamuddin's visit to SMK Pusa). Imagine that was after more than 23 years with thousands of other students under his authority between then and now.

So Gerubi D, cukup meh tu dulu kena nambah tauka complement your story. You brought up all those memories to light again now, thus a lot of those memories came back to my 'mainstream' active brain with better clarity. Therefore, worry not, whenever I have the time, I shall complement your story with a lot of other tales. So ila nampung baru cerita nuan tu.

Podgee maam..I guess every living organism has a price lah! I disclose it all electronically okay. BTW, thanks..I couldn't remember her name..that's all..your hubby and bro's classmate!! woooowww now that's what we call small world, enda pia? When will judge Henry preside?

Akai dai Joe...I know that Principal lah..wait..let me look up his name(bisi letters ari sida tu kelia ehhh in my briefcase safely kept). Joe, that 'batik indonesia case' kaban..only three of us knew but I think Neil knew too laban we were roommates!! If you recall...all occupants of that room closest to the jamban knew bah..but I didn't know until the next morning..I had to find out laban kena drilled by a good friend who said nobody else would have the guts to do something like that but me and some some others, so I must know!!! So I went to one of the lower sixth students..Hasbi..he talked because he trusted me with his heart..Apin 'the self-proclaimed setan pendek' Pauzan was with me. Aduhh ehhh..they shaved off their hairy public heads the next morning..those were the 'doers' ehh. I told Chia Pin Pin I had nothing to do with it too..he was in Cendrawasih, the third room after yours. But all fingers were quick to point at Gerubi ahhh. How come..not a mystery but it makes an inquiry about human ways of thinking, perceiving, sensing, etc so very unique and an interesting subject to explore. Joe, ukai nyamai kena interrogate semua pengajar!! I missed half a day because of that the next day..and nama would be forever tainted lalu nyadi object to be accused until I get the hell out. You realized and saw how it was...everybody seemed to shy away..hahahaha nya meh sampai disembur bala indu enggau ludah maya nanya nundi sida maya bepansa! Life went on lah..as Apin said heheh 'peduli apa' later. I told Mr. Ong about it, who the offenders were, when we were begulai ngajar ba SMK Pending before I chabut for good. This was how I knew who the suspects were, and how it was handled..he wasn't that happy though. I told him that I wasn't about to reveal any names while in Tanjung..even if I got punished for something I didn't do!He asked me why lah..so I told him why..he smiled in amazement.

Ahh Joe..Bolhan Tahir was his name!! Kaban, allow me to use your statements for my next blog as I have more to reveal about coupling and smoking. Although almost always at odd, I really have nothing againts Adi, but it would be interesting to dig deeper as to why, what, how, when, where, and who in a human mind. I knew that you and I were in and out of his office about smoking maya pom empat. He took away my yayasan but did he take yours away? smoking and coupling tu meh my next intended blog. Ya..Adi left in the middle of 83..three or four months after he suspended us for life! Nya meh..will be in blogsphere lah. Thanks for the input....very much appreciated..

regards to you folks.

Why I remebered the YB's chinese name was because she was good friends to my brother too at that that time. Personally, I think the best thing that Adi did at that time was to try to inculcate in us students a love of literature being a very literary kind of guy himself. Heavy into the sajak writings and all. I remember those prayers during the assembly, "the most merciful and most compassionate" too. I guess it was a good thing on his part, trying to make the prayers appear more universal. Us students coming from diverse backgrounds and all. I remember too going to see him about a place in the hostel, closer to the exam period but he turned me down flat. He said I would be denying someone else's a place. He said in the first place I had opted out during my lower six year. Never mind lah. The prerogative rested in his hands. And he commented about my "constant" change in hairstyle, hehehe. Ok lah, he's got a keen eye that one like Joe observed. Nice of him to notice though, hahahaha. And of course that coupling thingy affected a few of the "well-known" couples from our class too at that time. I think got caught by Adi too while dating... Not to mention names here out of respect to them and their current partners. Enjoying all the observations here........Cheers!

'Guilty by association' is found in most dictionaries but not in legal dictionary, which requires proof beyond reasonable doubt.

In every investigation everybody is a suspect unless one has a very strong alibi. So there's nothing strange or wrong about that although it can be embarrassing to be a suspect. Agatha Christie has driven home this point. No single name can be left out until eliminated. But no matter how strong is suspicion it never constitutes evidence. And guilt is only to be proved by evidence and evidence alone and not by strong suspicion. We have a maxim: "It's better to let nine guilty men free than convicting one innocent man".

In all fairness, no one should be condemned unheard. Therefore one must be given a chance to defend oneself whenever one is accused of having committed any wrongdoing.

Recalling one incident in 1980 with that Mr Ang when hell almost broke loose after I objected very strongly to his proposal in getting the boys who "stayed in the hostel and ate freely" to cut grass during Gawai Holiday.

I said, "Sir, it's not fair for you to order the Dayak boys to cut grass during Gawai Holiday."

He answered, "after all they are given free meals and free stay in the dormitory".

"But, this gawai, you can't make them cut grass during Gawai", I answered.

He replied, "They are not going back home and not celebrating Gawai".

I said, "Those who stay back come from far places and cannot afford to go home. If they have money surely they want to go home to celebrate Gawai. Most of them come from Kuching and Sri Aman".

He responded,"I think, since they have have nothing to do, it's better for them to help clear the grass near their hostel".

I replied with quite an angry tone, "If you insist, you better tell and supervise the boys yourself. I am not going to do that because I am an Iban and it's an insult to tell them to work during Gawai".

"But you are a Minister In Charge. It's your duty", he replied.

By this time I was already practically very angry and insulted. So I said, "I don't understand why you want the Dayak boys to cut grass during Gawai Dayak. But you never asked the Chinese boys to cut grass during last Chinese New Year although they also stayed and ate freely in the Kolej. What have the Dayak done to you".

With those last words of mine he was very angry and accused that I was a racist, which I denied. The truth was that I felt very insulted that he had no respect for the Dayak people sensitivity. To me it was unbecoming to order the Dayak boys to cut grass on their festive day. He may have his point, but to me I could not tolerate him who only saw thing in his own perspective alone. It was at this point I yelled at him and asked him to get lost and told him that if still insisted I would get the boys to chase him away with Parang bengkok. It was this point both of us lost our heads and called each other by name. I almost punched him had he not run to his car and sped off.

Way back at the end of 1978, that Mr Ang was an acting Principal of Three Rivers School(TRS)TRS was my former school before I went to Kolej in 1977. I studied there until 1976. Having passed the Sarawak Junior Certificate I went to Kolej in 1977. End of 1978 I went to see Mr Ang to ask him to release my SJC because I wanted to apply for a temporary teaching post after the Senior Cambridge. Because I still owed the school in the sum of RM120 (unpaid school fees)at the material time,Mr Ang refused inspite of my solemn undertaking that I would settle the fees once I've received my first pay. I begged but he was unmoved and asked me to stop pleading for favour and alleged that I had argued uncessarily. With that remarks, I replied, which still remember very well, "It's nothing wrong I am arguing, if indeed it can be considered an argument. Arguing is a normal thing. In Indian Parliament the MPs even threw chairs at each other during controversial debates. In my case I am just asking for your mercy".

Can any of you think what was his reaction? I'll tell you if you can't imagine.

He shouted at me at the top of his voice in front of the other staff members and said, "You get out of my office before I pull you out".

I said, "thank you sir, I will always remember this event for many years to come", and went out slowly; got my bicycle, which I rented from Tai Hua bicycle shop, and cycled off with disappointed heart.

Readers, I tell you no lies. Be that as it may, I have no axe to grind against that Mr Ang. He is welcome to read this posting. Some years later I met him at Premier Hotel in Sibu and had dinner together. At that time he told me he was a principal of one secondary school in Sri Aman Division (either Debak or Spaoh). Nonetheless, I reminded him that when one is at the top he cannot climb further and eventually has to go down; but those at the bottom would have every opportunity to climb up. After the dinner we parted with a gentleman handshake. I never meet him again until today.

Henry, thanking you very much for the valuable input kaban. Ya, kaban I was one of those boys. I gladly do the chasing with parang bengkok for you kaban!! hahahha..But kaban, if I may admit, later years kaban..I defended myself as well as defended others...well tried anyway..but to no avail! It made matter worse off..blew out of proportion even..and life went on thereafter. Runding enggau pikir pan nyau meh berubah laban utai besangka sangka bakatu kaban..I felt it berenyang shaking tong tangki ti penuh ai ngantika siuh aja. Bula enti kitai ngumbai perubah runding enggau pikir, enti udah ngalih, enda ngeruga pengawa pelajar enggau pendiau in general..laban tu more than ngerau anak mit ngumbai bisi indai abau belalai di teluk dinding. I felt for some nembiak laban pandai bakani pan untak dianjung dipasang belajar nyau meh limpang. And Ang?? haiya semadi ngenang aja deh tu..he seemed to release his anger on students for whatever reason..engka ba rumah iya alah laban bini or he is it ..almighty who does no wrong..restraining??..imprisoning???ngurung ngandang?? who knows!!Out loud..I don't like him period but I would extend my invitation to him 'ngelangkau' lah..and I wouldn't give him a chance ngelangkau peri ehh!!

Podgee maam, yes maam Adi was so deeply and heavily into sajak. I have intended 'coupling' to be the next one..we'll see in the next few days if my mind can wander and visualize while my fingers do the typing ehhh. Tanjung Lobang revisited ya.

Happy weekend folks.
